The Justin Guarini Show is designed to help up-and-coming musicians navigate through the cut-throat entertainment business. At the same time, the audience is given an opportunity to speak live with signed and unsigned artists, producers, and agents.

Freely and leakily, the sounds of Viva La Vida… are taking shape. Today brings us more of what is on the album, alongside news of what is not on the album — i.e. Coldplay’s collaboration with Kylie Minogue. Reason cited: too much sexy. NME reports:
Frontman Chris Martin revealed that the track was entitled ‘Lunar’, and that it would appear on an LP the band will release as early as 2009.
“At this point we cannot be that sexy,” he said, referring to why the track didn’t make the cut for the enw album. “It’s a song called ‘Lunar’ and Kylie is particularly brilliant on it.
But that does not mean there will be no new Coldplay additions to your It’s Business Time playlist. For the next time you plan to get amorous in Osaka, here’s the acoustic version of what is sure to be your jam:

Hilary Duff is photographed out shopping in NYC with a friend. After 30 minutes choosing, Hilary Duff ended up buying a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes. Perhaps the cute snakeskin pumps we saw her wearing last night for the CFDA Fashion Awards?

No more whispering. There are lots of Tricky quotes floating around regarding the first, markedly sung single from the forthcoming LP. Camp Trick says “Council Estate” is rooted in “twisted Specials-worshipping punk,” while the tricky looking kid himself touches on the cut’s newfound forefront vocal stylings:
It’s the first single I’ve ever done with just me on vocals. I couldn’t whisper that song. I had to come out of myself and do a loud, screaming vocal. I wanted to be a proper frontman on that one.’
The clip’s set within and without the sort of UK public housing that gives it its name, while Tricky toys with the stereotype: “They call you ‘council estate’ / they call you ‘can’t go straight’ / they call you ‘crime rate’ / they call you ‘can’t go straight.’” More sociopolitical sloganeering post-jump.

Cut Copy’s In Ghost Colours, and its supporting tour, continues to blow minds wherever it travels. But for all the strains of New Order, Pet Shop Boys, and even Fleetwood Mac that run through the album’s banging house, we did not realize “Hearts On Fire” is the post-millennial answer to “Why Does It Always Rain On Me?” until director Nagi Noda got involved.
Speaking of Fleetwood Mac and Cut Copy, you definitely have to hear the Cut Copy Lifelike remix of the Mac’s “Never Forget.” Check it at Hype.
In Ghost Colours is out via Modular.

Smoke came out some time ago. Don’t tell White Williams that, though, because recently the sharp-dressed, well-coiffed BTW has been coming up with videos for the album like it’s a brand new puppy. A couple weeks ago we had the cut-and-paste cinema of “New Violence.” In the clip for “Violator,” there are less dancing cops, but more dancing White Williamses along with slow-spreading ink spills, paper animation, magic rings, handcuffs, licorice ropes, black balloons, black leather, and sundry other dark-hued props.

Well sure, it’s not exactly her “Cobrastyle.” But turning up for estrogen hour at ABC studios with the suited Teddybears themselves indicates she’s got clearance to do with it as she pleases. This morning, as a few weeks ago on Letterman, that meant bringing her big-headed Swedish buddies along to the TV studio and doing her Robyn-ized take on the cut. Are we posting the performance clip for R’s fierce poses, for the synchronized bobbing of the Teddys, or as justification for the amazing Whoopi Goldberg-Sherri Shepherd-Robin Miriam Carlsson left-to-right on that still? The answer is yes. All that.

From the album title punchline contest to the Construction Paper Album art nicknames to the cute girl/creepy stalking video, the build-up to Narrow Stairs‘ release day has felt longer than sitting through a four-minute instrumental intro. And now web rippers and law-abiding music consumers alike can listen to and discuss DCFC’s latest with clear eyes, full hearts (can’t lose). Pretty sure everybody likes it better than Plans (right?). Fans of The Photo Album, We Have The Facts…, etc. will see some moments of those good times in “Cath” and “Your New Twin Sized Bed”; DCFC lovers of the major label days won’t find anything too mean to their ears; and as most have realized/read, there are some Walla attempts at fleshing out the sounds, bringing in the tablas, turning the amps to 11 (it’s a mixed bag). The more knobs tweaked, though, the more it’s clear this is a band that will live and die by Ben’s hand: Walla, Harmer, McGerr are all right in the pocket, but this is Gibbard’s ball. When he gets it right, and he does here on a majority of tracks, Ben can twist a phrase at just the right angles, turn a melody to just the right shape. If you like Death Cab, you will like Narrow Stairs. Unless and until the band wants to give us a Great Reinvention, it’s this. And mostly, this works. Stream it at AOL.
