2 down, 2 to go. The Cure’s monthly march of singles in anticipation of LP13 is well underway, and gets a new chapter today with “Freakshow.” Halfway into this thing we can say it’s not exactly a hit parade. It’s a hit-or-miss parade. Now nobody’s gonna say “The Only One” is groundbreaking, and that’s because it isn’t, but it brought to mind some of Robert’s sorta upbeat and poppy, lovelorn jangle gems, and that’s more than OK with us. “Freakshow” also is not groundbreaking, but it is a different sort of tune: different because it’s a mildly funky, cowbell and shaker rocker, with lots of wah-wah guitars, and different because it could maybe have been written by a high school band? I mean, granted, one with a legendary voice (I’d sign them if I saw them at the talent show, if that was still a thing), but still — that verse is just rote and plodding wah-funk. The hook has a moment, though. I know that’s not a glowing endorsement, but still all this can be yours for a dollar at iTunes.

Ashley Dupre, Eliot Spitzer’s $4,000 a night call girl, was spotted at Sea Girt’s beach along with her mother. In other words, big news. I almost couldn’t believe it. Ashley Dupre and her mom in a bikini. Tanning. Right there. Holy crap.

good evening! ok yes - i’ve seen these pictures on a bunch of other sites today but how could i pass up posting on a ‘golden girls’ reunion (estelle getty (84) sadly was not present) that took place on the red carpet over the weekend at the 6th annual TV land awards (which you can catch when the show airs next week) i do adore both betty white (86) and rue mcclanahan (74) but my favorite ‘golden’ lady hands down is bea arthur (86) probably because she played one of my favorite TV characters (besides ‘dorothy zbornak’) of all-time maude who happened to be the very sassy ’spin-off’ cousin of ‘edith bunker’ (played by the incredible jean stapleton (85)) from my top show ever all in the family - nobody makes sitcoms like those anymore - both shows were completely ahead of their time and they still hold up today! i did like the golden girls but you simply can’t compare it to norman lear’s sheer genuis! popbytes over & out for now…xxoo

People in London are flipping their wigs, literally and most likely literally, too, at the news of the Foos show Saturday night in Wembley stadium. Billboard.com reports on This Moment In Rock History:

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones turned an already high-profile Foo Fighters show into a once-in-a-lifetime event Saturday night (June 7) at London’s Wembley Stadium, joining the Foos for covers of Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll” and “Ramble On.”

Taylor Hawkins sang “Rock And Roll,” and Grohl took vocals on “Ramble On” because that is what singers do. Dave later told the crowd that it was “the greatest day of my entire life” because duh. Take it away, super loud YouTube clips:

Broken Social Scene may have decided to Present… Brendan Canning’s Something For All Of Us… a few weeks early due to leak issues (buy here, free MP3 here), but fellow BSS founder Kevin Drew isn’t ready to let you forget about his own ellipses-loving solo venture Spirit If… just yet. This new video for “Safety Bricks” has KD making like Dylan with a notebook for a quick minute, then shifts into a hand-in-hand stroll with some children in an out of the way village, strumming through dust storms, saluting the sun on a bluff. There are lots of bright smiles, hugs, and heartwarming moments to accompany the tune’s bitter, sweet shuffle. OK, you win, KD: We won’t forget about your album just yet. And if you’re gonna put this much heart into your clips, we don’t mind you stretching out the Spirit If… parade as long as you want.

Yup, Red continues birthing new b-sides. Last week we heard Rivers do BoA’s “メリクリ.” Now, there are four songs you may not want to sink your teeth into: “It’s Easy” offers loose, jammy country western(ish) sounds (which make me think of the Replacements for some reason… maybe because the band’s going on that Hootenanny tour?), odd and spacey pronunciations (”Miss Sweeney”), a dramatic ballad (”King”) or two (”The Spider”). “Pork And Beans” is a fun song — and a better video — and there are certainly other enjoyable Red moments, but it’s usually wise not to include extras if they’re just going to contaminate the rest of the already spotty track list. As always, you can judge for yourself.

Over the past decade and change, the scene that’s come to define Philadelphia — in media exposure and in most cases, artistic merit — has been spearheaded by the most fabulous Roots crew. Going to middle and high school in the area, word would trickle back to us in the burbs about what was happening on South Street — that there was a mindblowing rap crew with live instrumentation tearing up South Street nightly, fostering an affiliation of artists that would one day, they said, be synonymous with the city. So we’d go, hitch a ride with our friends licensed (and sometimes, not) to drive the Schuylkill Expressway, to sneak into whatever dingy spot we could to catch a glimpse of Black Thought and The One With The Afro. All that has happened since has been expected and yet entirely surprising. They’re the Comedy Central house band? Of course they are (what?). So anyway, children of greater Philly, you have it so much better now than we ever did — along with the Man Mans and the Pattern Is Movements, there’s now an entire Picnic organized by the Roots and their cadre of like minded friends, there for you to see without running the risk of getting grounded.

The fun went down on Saturday at Philly’s Festival Pier. Pretty much everywhere, it was hot. Converse All-Star Santogold unfortunately had to cancel due to a scheduling conflict, but the rest of the mighty, advertised lineup — including Diplo, Gnarls Barkley, the Cool Kids, Deerhoof, DJ Jazzy Jeff sans the Fresh Prince, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, and of course the Roots — was on hand, battling off searing temps and making a moment of it. Kyle Dean Reinford did the hard work slugging the festival-provided free water (nice one, Philly) and working the photo pit to capture a superb set of pics from the picnic.
