Last night Beck did in L.A. what he loves to do in L.A., hitting the Echo (or, Echoplex) for a “secret show” and work through some rarities — in this case, stuff from the out-any-day-now Modern Guilt. According to LA Weekly (via TDS), it was a “not-quite-packed” affair which featured some reworkings, like a My Bloody Valentine-y (yes, they are everywhere) fuzzed-up take on Sea Change’s spare and broken ballad “Lost Cause,” as well as the debut of new tunes including “Gamma Ray,” “Replica,” and the title track from Mr. Hansen’s new Danger Mouse-stamped LP. In a shocking turn of events, Sean “Diddy” Combs has changed his name back to Puff Daddy, the moniker that he earned his fame with.
“They call me Puff Daddy… he’s back,” the mogul raps on the remix of O’Neal McKnight’s single “Check Your Coat.” (McKnight is Combs’ former stylist.)

Feist fans, here’s a reminder: Leslie didn’t write “Brandy Alexander” all by her lonesome. Like “1234,” there’s a co-writing credit to go with the success, and here it belongs to Canadian vet Ron Sexsmith, who’ll release his own version of the track for his forthcoming LP Exit Strategy Of The Soul. (Here is a pic of the pair.) Entertainment Weekly, who have an advance stream, sat with Ron to learn that the tune was “inspired by a story of John Lennon and Harry Nilsson’s fondness for the cocktail.” So it’s no surprise that Ron’s version squares more evenly with the sound-era of the Lost Weekend. Justin Vernon’s “Creature Fear” is just a great heartbroken song. And like lots of the windswept and winning For Emma, Forever Ago, it gets wings when it’s live, and so we’re glad to hear Bon Iver do it solo in this latest Black Cab Session. That said, though, it’s the lyrics that make it especially perfect for a mild mannered and lost looking American aching away in the back seat of a London cab:

Matthew Houck, aka Phosphorescent, is not afraid to tackle someone else’s song. We’ve seen him do a version of Nick Cave’s “Right Now I’m A-Roaming” as well as offering a take on Weeds‘ “Little Boxes.” Here he digs into a different realm, giving the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” a spin. With all the hoots and chuckles, though, it’s actually more a cover of Tom Cruise’s hammy Top Gun pickup line than the smoother, sadder original.
