oh my gosh - if you’re around my age (32) you simply must have some level of affection for boy george and culture club - i still remember listening to karma chameleon when i was kid and thinking to myself that lead singer boy george was way cool - next month he’s doing a small club tour here in the states and i bought my tickets awhile ago - i’ll be seeing him play at the el rey theatre on july 15th - the night after i catch coldplay on the first night of their US tour (i am in love with chris martin - and contrary to recent reports the band’s new album viva la vida does not suck) the middle of july is going to be super hot! i just love going to concerts - tomorrow morning i’ll be picking up janet jackson tickets for when she comes to los angeles in september!

good morning boys & girls! with britney spears playing the low-key sanity card i almost forgot about her younger sister jamie lynn being pregnant (out of sight, out of mind) she’s featured on this week’s STAR magazine cover with a bunch of rumors insinuating all is not well between her and baby daddy casey aldridge - there’s been talk of the two getting hitched before their bundle of joy arrives (which must be really soon) but that might not be happening - i’m still kinda shocked ms. jamie lynn did indeed get preggers - when the rumor first hit the web it seemed outlandish but lo & behold - britney’s kids sean preston & jayden james will soon have a baby cousin to pal around with - those spears sisters sure are fertile! popbytes over & out for now…xxoo

We reported in September that Meg White got stressed out and therefore skipped ACL. Since then, Jack’s been seen around with Raconteurs (and Nick Zinner) quite a bit in support of Consolers Of The Lonely, but with no Meg in site. Last night at Detroit’s Fillmore that changed. Billboard had a report earlier today:

Coming back from the encore break of the Raconteurs’ concert at the Fillmore Detroit, Jack White was accompanied by ex-wife and White Stripes drummer Meg White, who sat at Patrick Keeler’s kit and tapped on a few of the drums.

With the audience going nuts, thinking it was about to see a surprise performance by the Stripes, Jack shouted, “Hey everybody, this is Meg White!” — after which she waved, got up and walked off the stage while the rest of the Raconteurs filed on for the encore.

That’s been updated and clarified a bit.

In a New York Times piece from this weekend called “Frustration and Fury: Take It. It’s Free.,” Jon Pareles visits Trent Reznor’s place “on the outskirts of Beverly Hills,” where there’s an ever-expanding kitchen renovation in the works; in fact, it turns out the only “neat and dust-free” room in the house is the studio where Reznor’s been recording his recent material, Ghost I-IV and The Slip. It’s another article about the shifting music industry, artists leaving their labels, etc., but Reznor’s candor turns it into something more interesting. Presenting the NIN brain-trust as “an old-school rocker who is devoted to the album as a creative unit,” but who has “reinvented himself as a digital-era adept,” Reznor talks candidly about giving away the music for free (”Aside from any kind of monetization of it, I’m glad to know that a million people have it on their iPods,” re: The Slip), NiggyTardust! (”I don’t know how you could look at this as a failure”), his own freedom from a label (”It was bittersweet”) and his general self-doubt (”I don’t even know why I’m saying this in an interview situation, but I always feel like I’m not good enough for some reason…”).

For his part, Pareles details the newer records well for folks who haven’t heard about them: We get the content and the stories around them (how long they took to make, Reznor’s philosophies behind them). We also find out Reznor’s collaborating with Tarantino producer Lawrence Bender on a cable TV series about Year Zero, among other things, and that Mr. Trent will soon have more free goodies: The software he created to “distribute digital files, assemble databases and connect easily with other applications.” (”We’ve spent the money to make it,” Mr. Reznor said. “Take it.”). Fascinating in a fly-on-the-wall sense are the descriptions of the home studio (”It has burgundy brocade curtains over red velvet drapes over plywood-lined walls,” etc) and Reznor’s conflicted thoughts on everything I’ve cataloged up to this point. As he tells Pareles, “I don’t agree that it should be free, but it is free, and you can either accept it or you can put your head in the sand.” He says more, too (”I know how old I am,” he said. “I’m not trying to fool anybody”), and comes off like a really good guy in the process. Props to the Gutter Twins for harnessing the inherent “this makes me want to run around and blow shit up”-iosity (technical music term, guys) of “Idle Hands” in this video featuring nothing more than kids running around, blowing shit up. OK, that’s not true. They also use flame throwers to light-on-fire shit up. There’s that old figure of speech: an idle mind is the devil’s playground.
